Our Very First Pub Quiz

Pub quiz team from The Hazlewell Care Home

This week, our residents at The Hazelwell swapped the armchair for the pub bench as they headed out to take part in their very first pub quiz night at The Cottage Loaf in Thurstaston. The outing brought together a lively group of residents and staff for an evening filled with laughter and plenty of brain-teasing questions—and they certainly didn’t disappoint.

For some of The Hazlewell quiz team, it was a chance to rekindle fond memories of quiz nights past, while for others, it was an entirely new experience. Although our team was the newest to the room, that didn’t stop them from jumping in with enthusiasm, showing off their sharp thinking and even sharper wit. While we didn’t bring home the trophy this time, we definitely turned a few heads with our general knowledge, and we had a few giggles over our rosé too.

Evenings like these are more than just a fun night out. Research shows that mentally stimulating activities such as quizzes can play an important role in maintaining cognitive health in older age. When we challenge the brain with questions, puzzles and gentle problem-solving, we are encouraging areas of the mind that help with memory, focus and reasoning. Keeping these skills active can support day-to-day independence and confidence, helping residents to feel more themselves and more in touch with the world around them.

There is also a great deal to be said for the social side of an outing like this. Enjoying time together in a relaxed setting, having a chat and a laugh, and enjoying a bit of friendly competition, helps strengthen relationships and create a sense of belonging. For many older people, especially those who may sometimes feel isolated or uncertain about joining in, being part of a team can bring a renewed sense of purpose. It reminds each person that they have something to contribute and that their knowledge and life experience are valued.

For those living with or at risk of dementia, the benefits can be especially meaningful. A gentle challenge in a familiar and supportive environment can help build confidence and self-esteem, while the shared achievement of taking part offers a sense of pride. No one is expected to know every answer. What matters most is the shared experience, the encouragement, and the joy of being included. In this way, evenings like the pub quiz support not only cognitive wellbeing, but emotional comfort too, helping residents feel connected, capable and warmly supported.

The Cottage Loaf was the perfect host for our quiz debut, offering a warm welcome and a friendly atmosphere that put everyone instantly at ease. Surrounded by cheerful locals, good food and a few glasses of wine, our residents were in great spirits, and were already talking about ‘next time’ before the final round was over.

Our excellent activities team are always looking for new ways to support not only the physical health of residents, but their mental and emotional wellbeing too. Whether it’s an afternoon out in the local community or a quieter activity within the home, we believe in helping every resident live life to the full, at their own pace. We’d like to thank everyone at The Cottage Loaf for making us feel so at home — and we’ll be brushing up on our trivia for next time!
