J.W’s Story of Rediscovering His Confidence at The Hazelwell

When J.W joined us at The Hazelwell Care Home in May 2025, he was facing an incredibly difficult time. At 86, following a diagnosis of cancer and a period of chemotherapy, J.W had become very unwell and had recently been admitted to a local hospice. He came to us for palliative care, requiring support with all aspects of daily living and feeling overwhelmed by his prognosis.
When J.W first arrived, he was withdrawn and found it difficult to engage with others. His appetite had reduced and he had experienced a number of falls prior to moving in, which impacted both his mobility and confidence. Our nursing team worked closely with him from day one, focusing on managing his pain, supporting his recovery following treatment and most importantly, helping him feel safe and comfortable.
Regaining Independence and Embracing Each Day
As J.W’s comfort improved and his strength began to return, we started to see a remarkable change in his state of mind. With encouragement from our team and support through gentle exercise sessions with Oomph, J.W gradually regained his mobility and confidence. Within just a few weeks, he began to re-engage with life at The Hazelwell and explore new ways to stay active and involved.
J.W soon found purpose in the everyday moments that make our home so special. He took on the role of delivering newspapers to fellow residents, proudly wearing a hat gifted by his family that names him “The oldest paper boy.” What began as a small activity quickly became a meaningful routine, bringing smiles and connection to others each day.
His love for the outdoors also flourished. J.W developed a passion for gardening and took it upon himself to enhance our garden spaces, even purchasing plants himself to make the surroundings more beautiful for everyone. His dedication and pride in this role have made a lasting impact, and he is now fondly known as the head gardener within our home.
Food and the overall dining experience have also become something he has fallen back in love with after a period of anxiety. With the support of our kitchen team, J.W rebuilt his relationship with mealtimes and now looks forward to his favourite dishes, particularly the traditional roast dinners served twice a week.
J.W’s presence within The Hazelwell community has become truly invaluable. He now warmly welcomes new residents, helping them to settle in and feel at ease, and works alongside our team to brighten each day with his positive attitude.

Our team have been deeply touched by his journey:

“Having J.W help with delivering papers not only adds some assistance but also gives me a lovely new colleague to work alongside and enjoy chats and a coffee” – Karen, Receptionist
“Watching J.W flourish and enjoy the gardening brings joy to us all and his welcoming manner make sure all new residents feel at home” – Kath, Activities Co-ordinator
